Hello, and welcome to my blog

From time to time I hope to share with you my observations and insights into the journey we are taking at Birdwood. We are always looking to help students own their learning and to take risks. I hope to keep you informed on our achievements and challenges.

Dear Parent/Carer

We have been made aware of recent incidents in primary schools where injury has occurred as a consequence of chin straps on hats being caught in play equipment. Broad brimmed hats with adjustable chin cords are not sold in our uniform shop however students may have these hats at home.  To this end, we request that:

•  you inspect hats at home and immediately remove any cords (DECD has mandated that hats with cords may no longer be worn at school)

•  if you have concerns about the safety of a hat please speak with our office staff

The safety of students at Birdwood High School is of utmost importance and our staff will continue to monitor and assess potential risks.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this matter please contact the school on 85685100 or by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Heather Makris, PRINCIPAL

It is a privilege to be the Principal of Birdwood High School and I take on this role with immense pride, commitment and enthusiasm. I have appreciated the warm and friendly welcome by the leadership team, teachers, staff and students and community.

Over the past twenty years I have undertaken a variety of leadership roles and responsibilities within the public and private sector. I have diverse experience in education, commerce and business. In recent years, I have worked at the Glenunga International High School and now join the Birdwood community from working in DECD corporate office as Senior Consultant and Principal for Education Reform. These experiences have further enriched my knowledge of education and given me a deeper level of understanding of the broader systems our schools operate within, and how to further support teachers and leaders to maximise student learning.

Students of the 21st century are presented with many opportunities and challenges. As technology improves our students will have unprecedented access to information. They will find themselves in a globally competitive environment and will be judged by how they apply what they know.   We want our students at Birdwood High School to be inspired and empowered by learning. We want to see our students grow and be confident in problem solving and critical thinking, teamwork, independence, interdependence, cooperation and creativity.

I will spend the first few weeks working closely with staff to discuss our key focus areas, and how we will together improve learning outcomes for our students by teaching for impact.

I look forward to working collaboratively with all members of our community to maximise each and every young persons’ development, wellbeing and learning. As a community, I look forward to us continuing to nurture our students to become the most successful and confident global learners they can be.

It is important that the school has up to date and accurate information regarding any medical issues or health concerns that we should be aware of and that may impact on activities that students are involved in.  If there is a Health Care Plan that will provide us with additional information to support your son/daughter/student please provide the school with a completed health Care Plan.  This form requires your doctor to add information about the care required to manage any medical health issue.  Copies of the Heath Care Plan templates are available by clicking on the hyperlink.  Please complete the Student Medical and Health Information form and return to Student Services by Friday 24 February 2017 with a completed Health Care if required.
